The Story of Chinese Gods
Fengshen Bang
封神榜
Synopsis
This story is based on a traditional Chinese novel with the same title. King Zhou of the Shang dynasty is under the spell of his concubine Daji, who is actually a vixen spirit disguised as a beautiful woman. He oppresses his people and persecutes anyone who opposes him, including his own loyal subjects who dare to speak out. Ji Fa, known as King Wu of Zhou, is guided by his strategist Jiang Ziya and gathers an army to overthrow the tyrant and bring peace and order. The conflict between the Shang and Zhou kingdoms involves numerous battles, with both sides summoning supernatural beings—gods, immortals, demons, spirits, and humans with magical powers—to fight for them. Yuanshi Tianzun gives Jiang Ziya the Fengshen Bang, a list that grants him the authority to appoint the gods of Heaven. The heroes of Zhou, along with some of their fallen enemies from Shang, are eventually given heavenly ranks and become gods, which is the origin of the novel's title.
