Synopsis

Shizuma Origasa, once a celebrated samurai from the Aizu Domain, now struggles to survive after his homeland's devastating defeat at the hands of the rising imperial government. He works as a rickshaw puller in Tokyo, all the while desperately searching for clues about his missing fiancée, Sumie Kanomata—a woman entrusted to him by his late friend, Gennosuke. After thwarting an assassination attempt, Shizuma is recruited into the police force, using his new position to continue his hunt for Sumie. His investigation quickly entangles him in a web of political schemes involving imperial loyalists, unyielding rebels, clever courtesans, meddling foreigners, and a mysterious yakuza boss named Kyoushirou Shuragami.
