Synopsis
On August 10, 2002, Mount Fuji erupts, and a succession of massive earthquakes and tsunamis devastates Japan, throwing the nation into a state of crisis. Just five days later, another powerful earthquake strikes on August 15, physically dividing the country in two. As Japanese refugees are taken in by nations around the world, the Japanese government accepts assistance from both China and the United States—an arrangement that ultimately places the northern half of Japan under Chinese governance and the southern half under American control. Fifteen years pass, and the Japanese refugees living in Taiwan find themselves increasingly at odds with the local Taiwanese population, driven by competition for employment and the persistently poor living conditions faced by the refugees. Genichiro Ryu, a young man who survived the catastrophe that destroyed Japan and was raised in Taiwan by an adoptive couple, becomes drawn into the growing conflict between the Taiwanese and the Japanese, holding onto the hope that both sides can find a way to live together peacefully.
