Synopsis
The Butterfly Lovers: Leon and Jo offers an animated retelling of the classic Chinese tale of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Set in China's Eastern Jin Dynasty, Zhu Yingtai is born into an upper-class family. Because women were forbidden from attending school, she pleaded with her relatives for permission to study, which they granted only on the condition that she disguise herself as a young man. There, she encountered Liang Shanbo, a handsome upper-class youth. The two instantly formed a bond, vowing to remain sworn brothers for life. Throughout their three years studying together in Hangzhou, Yingtai concealed her true identity from "Brother Liang." As time passed, her affection for him grew all-consuming, and she found herself thinking of nothing else but spending every day by Brother Liang's side.
