Synopsis

Continues the story of Modern

I completed this film just two months after finishing Playground. Taking inspiration from optical illusions, such as those in Escher's artworks, I created the film with isometric drawings. My goal was to produce an impressive film solely through transformations of rectangular parallelepipeds. I used the geometric animation technique, which was also employed in Metropolis, for this film. Alongside traditional cel animation, I keep producing works using this method. My hope is to eventually find a third alternative approach to apply in my future projects.

In this installment

For this piece, I utilized a sheet of graph paper—the kind normally reserved for architectural drafting—and brought together straight lines extending in three separate directions to build the image. To me, the true appeal of animation lies in its constraints. It was those very constraints I wanted to push against, so I set out to craft animation using the barest essentials. Though it may come across as computer-generated imagery, this is actually digital animation drawn entirely by hand.
