In 1918, during Japan's Taisho era, 17-year-old Benio Hanamura actively defies social conventions. Recognized for her loud demeanor and fighting spirit, this tomboyish young woman spends her time practicing kendo and climbing trees alongside her close friends Tamaki and Ranmaru. Though Benio is determined to choose her own romantic destiny, her family has different arrangements for her future. As war disrupts the period, she struggles with questions of personal independence, devotion to her companions, and the intricacies of love.
