Synopsis

The film Ao Oni The Animation adopts a style more akin to the traditional mystery horror of the original game while featuring an original story distinct from the game, novelization, and live-action adaptations. Set in a suburban town at the edge of a mountain forest, the narrative follows five members of a high school folklore research club. While brainstorming ideas for the upcoming culture festival, they come across a collection of research notes left by a former member from forty years prior. The legend recorded in those notes closely mirrors a popular free game known as "Ao Oni," prompting the club to select that game as their culture festival theme. They manage to arrange a meeting with the game's creator, but soon after, the creator dies under mysterious circumstances. As the club members delve into the mystery within their school, the door suddenly closes, and they become trapped inside.
