Synopsis
In the period before World War II, a photography studio located on a hilltop provides the setting for this narrative. People often come to have their portraits taken. One day, a married couple arrives, and the wife is extremely shy, keeping her eyes cast downward. The studio's owner tries many different methods to get her to smile and eventually manages to do so. Exactly one year later, the same couple returns, this time accompanied by their daughter, who always wears a grumpy expression. The owner again employs every technique available to make her smile. This interaction forms the basis of an enduring connection between the girl and the studio owner, one that continues for many years.
