Polar Bear Bears Boredom

Synopsis

A polar bear, deeply bored with the various marine creatures inhabiting the deep blue sea, carries on an age-old tradition of "Caricatures of Frolicking Animals" in the style of scroll paintings. This time, it takes the form of "Frolicking Sea Animals" as an animation, incorporating playful wordplay between Japanese and English: "Hokyoku-Guma Suggoku Hima. / Polar bear bears boredom" and "Kawauso Kawaisou. / Other otter, poor otter," among others. This project draws inspiration from the 12th to 13th century Japanese picture scroll, Bird and Beast Character Caricature. Marine animals spread across the world's oceans. Using the short rhythm of verse, the viewer can enjoy the various sea animals' thoughts and lives. The rhyme is composed in both English and Japanese with the same meaning, and the film is presented as a single continuous scene and single cut lasting 7 minutes. It debuted at the 39th Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival on August 14, 2021, during the 'KIDSEYE FILM FESTIVAL - ANIMATED SHORTS'.
