In a world where humanity has lost its connection to fire and now fears it due to spontaneous combustion triggered by proximity to natural flames, society survives by relying on a stone-like substance extracted from monsters that inhabit numerous forests. This material serves as a vital new energy source, providing light and power. Those who brave the dangers of the forests to collect this precious resource are known as fire hunters. Touko, a young villager, is saved from a forest creature by a fire hunter, who sacrifices themselves in the process. After recovering from her injuries, she is sent to the capital with the hunter’s dog, Kanata, and the hunter’s fire sickle to deliver them to the hunter’s family. Koushi, the deceased hunter's son, along with his sister, is taken in by an affluent household. Koushi begins to uncover ominous secrets tied to the ruling monarchy as he secretly investigates a unique fire stone that his father had discovered. This leads to a race against time between the nation’s leaders and those determined to prevent humanity's ultimate demise.

After a brutal battle, Touko becomes lost amid the chaos of a city overrun by the Spiders—people who possess dangerous supernatural abilities. She aims to return the belongings of Haijuu, a fire hunter who gave his life to rescue her. With Haijuu's dog Kanata and Akira, another fire hunter who has looked after her, she tries to navigate the crisis. But when Akira is sent away on an urgent mission, Touko is forced directly into the heart of the conflict and sets out on a new journey. At the same time, Haijuu's son Koushi fights to protect the city despite having little physical strength. His resourcefulness has produced many effective weapons, especially a cannon that unleashes divine lightning against the Spider invaders. Because this weapon's immense power is considered an affront to the gods, the deity Hibari steps in to stop Koushi's efforts. Caught between divine and human schemes, Touko and Koushi face overwhelming obstacles as they struggle to survive.
