Synopsis
The story takes place in early 18th-century Edo during the Kyouhou era, a time when merchant culture thrived. In Yoshiwara, the city's red-light district, a popular and beautiful courtesan named Usugumo is known for her charm and character. In truth, she is the daughter of a Christianized prostitute and the shogun Yoshimune, but the political struggles of the era prevent her from being with her father. Her life changes when she meets Kikunosuke, a blond-haired thief. Together with Kikunosuke, a doctor named Aoto Touichirou who practices the unfamiliar Western medicine, and her pet cat Kotetsu, Usugumo forms a thief band called the Kikugumi. Meanwhile, a member of a mysterious group appears, targeting Usugumo.
