During the chaotic final years of the Tang Dynasty, cannibalism is widespread. An aging knight-errant, once a renowned hero but now afflicted by illness, lives day by day only to escape starvation. His life changes when he meets a young girl, awakening his long-dormant courage and compassion.

During the closing years of the Tang Dynasty, a peasant rebellion forces two enslaved foreigners to serve as human shields for local warlords. They endure that ordeal, but soon find themselves pursued by the very insurgents who began the chaos.
