Synopsis
Continues the story of Yo-kai Watch Shadowside: The Return of the Oni King
Set three decades after the events of the original Youkai Watch TV series, the story begins with Keita Amano, an 11-year-old boy who once owned a wristwatch capable of commanding Youkai. Through that watch, Keita befriended many Youkai and accomplished numerous great deeds. However, as Keita grew older, the ability to see Youkai faded. The wristwatch itself, because its power threatened to disrupt the balance between the human world and the Youkai world, was cast away into oblivion beyond time and space. In time, the tale of the Youkai-controlling wristwatch became nothing more than a legend. Then, after many years passed, something happened: an epidemic Youkai virus called Onimaro began affecting people with malevolent intentions. Spreading without limit, the virus transformed those infected into Kaodeka Oni and threw the city into chaos. With the end approaching, only those chosen by a new Youkai Watch can rise against the coming threat and save both Youkai and humans from certain destruction.

The film weaves together the friendships of three children and various yo-kai. Set in the 1960s, in the Sakura Motomachi district of Tokyo, the story follows a boy named Shin, who lives a poor yet content life. After his mother—his only remaining family member—passes away, Shin's sorrow reaches its lowest point. At that moment, another boy named Itsuki comes to Shin's rescue; Itsuki has also lost his older sister. Shin, Itsuki, and a young girl named Tae, who has the ability to see yo-kai, become friends. Shin's guardian spirit, a Nekomata cat named Suu-san, along with other new yo-kai, join their circle. Together, the group rediscovers what it means to have a precious family. But this newfound family must confront a mysterious incident, and a shocking truth awaits them.
