Synopsis
Sayounara Kaba-kun combines live-action footage and animation to portray the real experiences of animals at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo during World War II, with special emphasis on the difficulties created by heavy bombings and the shortage of supplies. The narrative centers on the zoo's hippos, who were ultimately slaughtered for sustenance as the war drew to a close. Newtype described the work as "a reflection on the tragedies of war and a plea for peace."
