Kiryu, a young man who dreams of becoming a ukiyo-e artist, spends his days in stifling frustration, earning his living by tattooing penal marks onto criminals. One day, a commission arrives for Kiryu to ink Shirasagi—a stunningly beautiful male courtesan renowned as being "worth a hundred ryo for a single night." Though constantly at the mercy of Shirasagi’s capricious whims, Kiryu finds himself powerfully drawn to him; and in turn, Shirasagi gradually begins to harbour feelings for the earnest Kiryu.
