Summary
Sumomo, known as Maylene in English-language releases, serves as the young Gym Leader of Veilstone City with a specialization in Fighting-types. Her name is derived from "melee," reflecting her combat-focused style. In the game, players must defeat Gym Trainers who use Fighting-type Pokémon to solve a puzzle that unlocks the path to her. During the battle, she utilizes a Meditite at Level 27, a Machoke at Level 27, and a Lucario at Level 30. Victorious trainers are awarded the Cobble Badge. Her father can be found playing at the Veilstone City Casino, where he mentions his daughter, describing her as a tough individual. In the anime, Sumomo first appears in the episode "Lost Leader Strategy." When Ash and his companions arrive in Veilstone City, they witness a girl training with a Lucario, who is subsequently identified as Maylene, the Veilstone City Gym Leader. Although Ash immediately requests a battle, she declines due to Paul. She later faces Dawn in "Crossing the Battle Line!" using her Lucario, Meditite, and Machoke. Finally, in "A Triple Fighting Chance!", she battles Ash and loses, allowing him to obtain the Cobble Badge.
