Summary
Miyagi Ryouta is a second-year student in Class 1 at Shohoku High School, born on July 31st. Standing at 168 cm and weighing 59 kg, he serves as the team’s point guard, wearing jersey number 7 and Converse sneakers. While little is known about his past, he joined the basketball club primarily out of passion for the sport, though his devotion to team manager Ayako also drives him. Although the coach of Ryonan recruited him, Miyagi chose Shohoku due to his respect for Coach Anzai. He has a reputation as a troublemaker with a violent streak, frequently getting into brawls; notably, he once beat up Mitsui, resulting in Miyagi’s own hospitalization. Despite his short stature, Miyagi possesses the fastest speed among all characters in Slam Dunk. His exceptional dribbling skills, combined with his velocity, allow him to dismantle opposing defenses and deliver precise, often no-look, passes to open teammates. He is also a capable scorer and an elite defender with remarkable stealing ability. Recognized as the team’s strategist with keen court awareness, he eventually succeeds Akagi as team captain after Akagi retires to focus on his studies. Coach Anzai values Miyagi for his speed and sharp instincts. Off the court, he is skilled in street fighting, possessing a powerful flying kick, as Mitsui has confirmed. Personality-wise, Miyagi is intelligent but often rude, displaying sweetness only toward Ayako. His attempts to move on from unrequited love by dating other women failed, revealing his sensitive nature. Initially, he mistook Sakuragi Hanamichi for Ayako’s boyfriend and attacked him, but they bonded over their shared romantic struggles and became close friends. Miyagi has a short temper and is easily provoked when people mock his height. During the match against Toyotama, he lost his composure against the opposing point guard and nearly assaulted him, but regained his focus in the second half to demonstrate his true potential. His appearance is marked by his short height, a green earring in his left ear, and sweatbands on his left wrist.
