Summary
Matthew Reese serves as the Pope and head of the Roman Catholic Church within the Toaru Majutsu no Index series. His true name is Matthew Reese, and prior to assuming the papal role, he was a friend and former disciple of Fiamma of the Right. Unlike many real-world pontiffs, he feels disconnected from the populace outside the chapel and ponders the reasons behind this isolation. Nevertheless, he remains strictly bound by the rules and beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. When the magic side discovers Touma and his abilities, Fiamma persuades the Pope that Touma is a Heretic whose powers threaten the world. Consequently, the Pope declares Touma a Heretic who must be eliminated. He is an elderly man with a white beard, dressed in standard papal regalia. He carries a crosier featuring a crucified Christ on the front and the figure of the hanged Judas Iscariot on the rear.
