Meiou, Setsuna

Summary

Born on October 29 under the Scorpio sign with blood type A, Setsuna Meiou enjoys shopping, dark red, garnets, rhythmic gymnastics, physics, and green tea, while disliking music and eggplant. Sailor Pluto first appears as a Senshi in the second major story arc, with her civilian form not revealed until the third. She is unique in being stationed at the Door of Space-Time, tasked with forbidding unauthorized passage. Her powers relate to both time and the underworld. Introduced late in the Sailor Moon R series, she guards the gates of time and initially contacts Chibiusa through Luna-P, referring to the girl as "Small Lady." Chibiusa typically calls her "Puu," and Sailor Pluto acts as her guardian. After the second arc, she leaves her post to live as a human, joins the Outer Senshi, and becomes a university physics student. In the manga, she is reincarnated by Neo-Queen Serenity after sacrificing herself, whereas the anime allows her to leave. As a civilian, Setsuna remains the oldest of the team, in her late teens or older. Her personality is often distant and lonely, yet she shows warmth toward Chibiusa. Upon reincarnation, she becomes friendlier but remains emotionally reserved, though the manga shows her expressing more emotion than the anime. Later, she cares for Hotaru alongside Michiru and Haruka. Unlike other Senshi, her humanity is questioned, with descriptions calling her a goddess eternally guarding the Portal of Space and Time. Her abilities and knowledge are vaguely defined, with theories suggesting omniscience, possibly due to her anime portrayal. For instance, she knew about the sailor soldiers hunting mystical objects but did not inform them, allowing attacks to occur—a deviation from the manga that may be a continuity error. This omniscience is depicted as watching through the gates of time. Sailor Pluto appears in few TV episodes. Unlike Sailor Neptune and Uranus, she is sympathetic toward the Guardian Senshi, assisting them. In the second arc, she allows time travel despite restrictions. In the third, she aids Sailor Moon and her companions even when Uranus and Neptune prefer separation. She later joins the Guardians to investigate ChibiChibi. In the manga, she inspires Ami, strengthening Sailor Mercury for her Super form transformation. In the manga, Sailor Pluto has additional influences and dominion, vaguely suggested in the anime. Her initial manga form is darker, with dark skin and a black sailor uniform, identified as the Guardian of the Underworld and daughter of Chronos, the god of time. She is a ruthless soldier enforcing strict laws, executing intruders seeking the Gates of Time. She nearly kills Sailor Moon before recognizing her, stating all who break the taboo must be eliminated. Luna notes that no one should know Sailor Pluto exists due to her dominion, calling her a lone warrior with sadness in her eyes.
