Summary
Mozgus serves as a chief Inquisitor for the Holy See, roaming the globe with a cadre of torturers tasked with eradicating a violent cult of heretics in the city of St. Albion. As the primary antagonist within the Tower of Conviction, his overwhelming religious fanaticism obstructs Guts' attempts to rescue Casca. His emblem, consisting of four torture wheels, reflects his conviction that suffering is a necessary tool for purging evil from humanity. Before the events of the Resurrection Arc, Mozgus operated as a zealous agent of the Holy See. He recruited a small group of outcasts and disfigured individuals, offering them solace by reciting passages from the Holy See Doctrine. He convinced them to view their physical deformities as proud gifts from God and trained them in his brutal methods of interrogation, which are vicious and often leave survivors with permanent, severe injuries. Dispatched to St. Albion to suppress heresy, Mozgus requested the Holy Iron Chain Knights as his personal guard. While a genuine heretical sect based on orgiastic rituals existed in the surrounding mountains, Mozgus made little effort to dismantle it, allowing Farnese to capture many of its members instead. His true focus lay in brutally crushing the rebellions of St. Albion’s impoverished and starving populace against the Holy See’s tyrannical rule. He viewed any defiance against himself as direct rebellion against God, whose authority he believed he embodied. Physically imposing and strong, Mozgus is harsh and demanding toward everyone, including himself. He demonstrated his severity to Farnese by quelling several uprisings with threats of death and torture, sparing only a young mother who pleaded for food for her starving child. Although he provided the child with nourishment and medical care, he sentenced the mother to torture, praying tearfully that she would survive the test of faith God had prepared for her, using the incident to illustrate the ruthless nature of divine doctrine.
