Summary
Marshall D. Teach, known as Blackbeard, was once a member of the Whitebeard Pirates’ second division under Portgas D. Ace. Shanks had warned Whitebeard that Teach was growing stronger than his captain and had only joined the crew to hide behind the Whitebeard name until he was powerful enough to act. That moment arrived when Teach murdered a crewmate, triggering his expulsion and Ace’s pursuit. It was also Teach who inflicted the scars around Shanks’ eye long ago. Concerned about the timing of a confrontation between Ace and Teach, Shanks advised Whitebeard to recall Ace. After Luffy defeated Crocodile in Alabasta, Lafitte attempted to nominate Teach as a replacement Shichibukai, but Teach needed to establish a fearsome reputation first. Teach crossed paths with Luffy in Jaya, where they nearly fought over food preferences but ended with Teach giving Luffy a friendly speech about pirates never stopping their dreams. Despite this camaraderie, Teach sought to eliminate a strong pirate to make a name for himself. Upon learning of Luffy’s 100 million Belli bounty, he chose him as his target. However, he failed to capture them as a knock-up stream blasted the Straw Hats toward Skypiea.
