Kuroneko
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Kuroneko is, as her name implies, a black cat. Creator Yasuhiro Nightow has confirmed that this feline is female. Described as a small black cat with large green eyes, Kuroneko-sama’s personality remains largely undefined, though she behaves like an ordinary cat. She appears in every episode of the first anime series and pops up randomly in the manga, typically serving as a running gag by materializing at opportune moments to utter a simple "nyaa." Despite her frequent recurrence, she rarely holds plot significance. Notable exceptions include her stopping Wolfwood from cheating during a chess match in the episode "Escape from Pain," and a scene in "Hang Fire" where she is replaced by Vash. Nightow has explained that he includes her because she is easy and calming to draw between action sequences, often responding to questions about her deeper meaning at conventions by simply stating that "Kuroneko-sama is a small black cat." In Trigun Maximum, Kuroneko makes only brief appearances in Nightow’s commentary sections at the end of each issue, where she frequently criticizes the author for his lazy and silly nature. In the film Trigun Badlands Rumble, she is first seen napping at a newsstand just as Vash learns he is being blamed for Gasback’s bank heist. She is later observed watching Meryl and Milly as they discuss their situation regarding Cain’s statue. During a bar fight later in the movie, Kuroneko is shown flying through the air alongside other items, appearing to be used as a projectile by an unseen attacker. Additionally, Kuroneko-sama makes small cameo appearances in several episodes of Kekkai Sensen and Kekkai Sensen & Beyond.
