Summary
Kushana is the youngest daughter of the Vai Emperor and the Princess of Torumekia. In the anime adaptation, she lost an arm as a child during an Ohmu attack, fueling her intense desire for revenge against the giant insects. She is determined to eradicate the Sea of Corruption by any means necessary. Although she is not portrayed as wholly evil, she serves as a clear antagonist in this version. The manga presents a far more complex character who functions as an antihero and ally rather than a villain. Her primary motivation is revenge against her father and three older half-brothers, whom she blames for her mother’s tragic fate. As the commander of the Torumekian Third Army, which she trained personally, she is deeply devoted to her soldiers, who remain fiercely loyal to her. Despite her ferocity in combat, she possesses a noble character that commands the respect of both Nausicaä and Master Yupa. While she admires Nausicaä’s pacifist ideals, Kushana believes she is inevitably destined to walk a path of bloodshed.
