Summary
A figure from the Moomin universe crafted by Tove Jansson, The Groke resembles a ghostly, hill-shaped entity featuring two cold, staring eyes and a wide row of gleaming white teeth. Although a tail is mentioned in the book Who Will Comfort Toffle?, it has never actually been depicted. Her presence causes the ground beneath her to freeze, killing plants and grass, while her footsteps leave trails of ice and snow. Any object she touches becomes frozen, as demonstrated when she extinguished a campfire by sitting on it. Desperately seeking friendship and warmth, she is rejected by all, forcing her to remain in her cold cavern atop the Lonely Mountains. The Groke serves as a literal embodiment of isolation and a psychological portrait of individuals who struggle to accept and express love appropriately, appearing cold and frightening to others, which ultimately deepens their solitude.
