'Welcome Back': Higurashi When They Cry Gets New TV Anime

The landmark horror mystery series is making a triumphant return to television. Kadokawa announced the new project during a livestreamed 20th anniversary celebration for the 2006 TV anime, confirming that production on a fresh television anime has been greenlit.
Studio DEEN, which brought the initial adaptations to life, is once again handling animation duties. The announcement also confirmed that the principal voice actors are reprising their roles, including Sōichirō Hoshi as Keiichi Maebara and Mai Nakahara as Rena Ryūgū, alongside Satsuki Yukino, Mika Kanai, and Yukari Tamura.
Accompanying the news was a teaser visual spotlighting Rena with a cheerful expression and the evocative tagline "みんな、おかえり" or "Welcome back, everyone," paired with a promotional video. No broadcast window has been disclosed, but the reveal has ignited significant fan anticipation.
Rooted in Ryukishi07's visual novel from 07th Expansion, the story follows ordinary teens in the isolated village of Hinamizawa as dark secrets and violent incidents tied to the annual festival unfold in chilling fashion. The series has long stood as a pillar of psychological horror anime.
With the classic team reuniting for this new entry, the announcement signals a heartfelt nod to the franchise's roots while opening the door to potential new terrors for both veteran fans and newcomers.
