

Synopsis
In 18th-century Edo, Owaka, the daughter of a merchant family, and her childhood friend Matsukichi are drawn to each other. However, Matsukichi has been disowned by his family and now works for the city fire brigade. Meanwhile, negotiations for Owaka's arranged marriage begin. Unable to let go of her feelings for Matsukichi, her mad emotions spark a massive inferno that razes Edo. By chance, the two meet again amidst the fires. This epic spectacle unfolds against the stage of the vast metropolis of Edo.
Background
Hi no Youjin won the Grand Prize at the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival and the 67th Noburou Oofuji Award at the 2012 Mainichi Film Awards. Winner of the Platinum Grand Prize during the 2014 Future Film Festival, held in Italy.
