Synopsis
In a totalitarian, male-dominated society, a female high-heeled shoe named Mulan Hua rises up against the baby shoe factory to prevent her infant daughter from being made into a male shoe. To support her child, she later disguises herself as a sturdy male shoe and toils around the clock in a capitalist cigarette factory. The narrative explores not only a mother's selflessness and a feminist's quest for retribution, but also carries a political undercurrent about the corrupting nature of power.
Background
SHe is Shengwei Zhou's debut feature, completed in six years. He built this surreal world with a massive number of recycled everyday objects, and the film is composed of over 58,000 photos.
