Synopsis

Released in 1981 and helmed by Takahata, Jarinko Chie adapts the wildly popular manga by Etsumi HARUKI. The narrative centers on ten-year-old Chie, dubbed "the most unfortunate girl in Japan," who runs her family's diner while her unemployed yakuza father and separated mother are absent. Despite this seemingly bleak premise, the film is actually a hilarious comedy. Set in Osaka, a locale with a distinct culture compared to Tokyo, the story proved so successful that it spawned a TV series, with Takahata serving as the chief director.
