Synopsis
Jubei Kibagami travels across feudal Japan as a hired swordsman with no fixed home. Having been betrayed in the past and left without a master, he has grown tired of the endless conflicts between warring political factions and their schemes. However, his past and these political machinations collide when he encounters and rescues a female ninja named Kagero from a man whose body can turn as hard as stone. As the last surviving member of her ninja clan, Kagero presses on with her team's final assignment: looking into a strange plague that wiped out an entire village. Jubei wants no part in this, but the stone-like man's comrades—a group of ninja with supernatural abilities called the Devils of Kimon—make it hard to stay out of the fight. To complicate matters further, a government agent poisons Jubei and offers him an antidote only if he uncovers the true goals of the Devils of Kimon and how they are linked to the plague. The investigation leads him to shadowy leaders, a conspiracy to overthrow the government, and a man Jubei never expected to encounter again.
