Hitohito Tadano arrives at high school determined to remain inconspicuous and avoid any drama. His plan collapses immediately when he sits next to Shouko Komi, the school’s most admired student. This act makes Tadano a target for classmates eager to displace him and take her seat. Komi appears flawless and is widely beloved, yet she secretly suffers from severe social anxiety and a communication disorder that isolates her from her peers. When left alone in the classroom, circumstances compel Komi to communicate with Tadano by writing on the blackboard. Recognizing her struggle for the first time, Tadano responds, learning that her ambition is to make one hundred friends. He offers his assistance, effectively becoming her first true friend.

After a thrilling and memorable cultural festival, Shouko Komi continues her quest to make one hundred friends with her friend and classmate Hitohito Tadano. When winter arrives, the class is joined by Makoto Katai, a student who appears to be a delinquent but has been absent since the first week of school. Despite his intimidating look, Katai struggles to communicate with others and simply wants to become friends with his classmates. As new friendships develop and existing ones grow deeper, the relationship between Komi and Tadano begins to shift—though not necessarily for the worse.
