Synopsis
This animated film tells the story of Ryoukan, a historical Buddhist monk and celebrated poet from 18th century Japan's Edo Period. Despite being born into wealth in Izumozaki, he forgoes the comfortable life he could have inherited to seek life's deeper meaning through Buddhist teachings. Beginning in his early adulthood, he endures rigorous ascetic training that requires a solitary and austere existence. Throughout his life, he remains deeply modest and humble, a genuine humanitarian who accepts every person as they are while rejecting all worldly fame and riches. Ryoukan discovered lasting peace in nature and in the company of children. His pure heart and gentle nature have inspired many, and his legacy together with his teachings continue to endure.
