Synopsis

Urashima Taro adapts a classic Japanese folk tale of an honest fisherman who rescues a sea turtle from bullies on a beach and is then invited to an underwater castle. Based on its content and the circumstances of its discovery, this film was initially believed to be a work produced by Kitayama at the Nippon Katsudo Shashin Corporation (Nikkatsu) studio in 1918. However, stills from Nikkatsu's 1918 release titled Urashima Taro have recently been found in a magazine, and these stills do not appear in this film, leading to the conclusion that this film is not the work Kitayama made at the Nikkatsu studio.

Background

The film was made available online as part of the National Project for the Sustainability of Born-Digital Cinema, supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan in the fiscal 2016.
